Doha will remain the host city of the 2019 world athletics championships despite the diplomatic crisis being faced by Qatar, and the 2023 edition could see a return to Spain, according to the head of the ruling body IAAF, Sebastian Coe.

Coe told reporters on Wednesday during the London worlds he sees no reason not to go to Qatar after Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other countries in the region cut diplomatic ties over allegations that Qatar sponsored terrorism.

Qatar has denied the allegations. The nation was awarded the worlds in 2014 and Coe said there was no reason to reconsider.

"These kinds of problems come and go, but we have chosen that venue and we're going to go. Besides, we have good relations with the countries in that area," Coe said.

The 2021 edition is in Eugene, Oregon, and Coe said that it could then be Spain's turn again in 2023 as it has the infrastructure and expertise to stage the showcase event of the Olympic number one sport, having hosted the 1999 edition in Seville.

"Spain has already organized all the possible championships of our sport and has shown that it can do well," Coe said.

"What is clear is that we can not afford not to be in the right place for upcoming championships. We have to find cities that help us reach more people, more children, generate more resources, places where everything is prepared for us to be a top sport in the world," Coe said.

Coe also said he and the IAAF will continue to reshape the sport for the future and that "we have to make sure that we are not only a sport but a global movement."
