Morocco have launched a bid to host the World Cup in 2026, the country's football association (RMFF) said Friday.

In a short statement posted online, the RMFF confirmed it had submitted an application to world governing body FIFA by the deadline day of August 11.

Morocco's hopes of bringing the global competition to Africa for just the second time seem slim, however, as a triple bid from the United States, Mexico and Canada is considered likely to succeed.

The 2026 host is to be elected at next year's FIFA Congress as the governing body rejected a US, Canada and Mexico request for their bid to be fast-tracked to approval.

Bids could only come from Africa, South America or Oceania as Europe and Asia are ruled out as 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar) host the next editions.

The 2026 event is the first with the tournament expanded to 48 teams.
